# Celebrant, Tweed Heads & Coolangatta

The state border runs down the middle of this suburb, so a ceremony at Point Danger can be registered in New South Wales or in Queensland depending on which side of the line you stand. That changes the certificate fee, $70 against $58.10, and nothing else about the marriage. Ceremonies with Felicity Best are half an hour from Murwillumbah, and every price is published in full.

## Where the border runs, and the hour it changes

The line runs along Boundary Street and out to the monument at Point Danger, so two halves of one suburb sit in different states. For six months of the year they also sit in different hours. New South Wales observes daylight saving from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April and Queensland does not, so a ceremony at Rainbow Bay called for five o'clock is at six o'clock to anyone driving up from Kingscliff.

It is the most common piece of confusion in this suburb and the easiest to fix: put the state next to the time on every invitation, run sheet and supplier confirmation between October and April. Otherwise guests coming from each direction arrive an hour apart, and exactly half of them will have been right.

## Choosing a registry

Where you stand decides it, not a form. A ceremony held on the Queensland side is registered by the Queensland registry, and one held on the New South Wales side goes to New South Wales. I lodge with whichever it is, and you choose by picking the spot.

What follows is small and permanent. A standard certificate is $70 in New South Wales and $58.10 in Queensland, and the state that registered the marriage is the one you order a replacement from in twenty years, wherever you are living then. Nothing about the notice, the witnesses or the ceremony itself changes.

Questions

## Questions people ask

Does it matter which side of the border we marry on?

For the marriage itself, no. It is a Commonwealth law and I am authorised Australia wide. What changes is which registry receives the paperwork and what a certificate costs, $70 standard in New South Wales against $58.10 in Queensland, and which state you would order a replacement from if you ever needed one.

Can we marry at Point Danger?

Yes, and the border monument there is on the line itself. It is a Gold Coast City and Tweed Shire boundary site, so the permit depends on exactly where you stand. The lookout, Rainbow Bay and Snapper Rocks are all popular and all get booked for sunset slots months ahead in summer.

Are you registered in both states?

The question does not quite apply. I am authorised by the Commonwealth Attorney-General under the Marriage Act 1961 and may solemnise a marriage anywhere in Australia, so there is no state registration to hold. It is why a Murwillumbah base covers both sides of the border with no extra step.
