Where to elope in Byron Bay
Byron Bay's best elopement spots are the ones people do not queue for: Wategos at sunrise, Broken Head for space and rainforest, and the hinterland around Bangalow and Federal when the beaches are full. Every coastal site needs a permit, from Byron Shire for Main Beach and NSW National Parks for Wategos and The Pass. Summer sunset slots book out months ahead, and sunrise almost never does.
Wategos, and the hour that changes it
Wategos is the site everyone names and very few people book well. It faces north east into the sunrise, the headland shelters it from a southerly, and it is a short steep road down from the lighthouse with a car park that fills by mid morning. At sunrise it is empty, the permit slots are available and the light comes straight down the beach. By eleven it is a busy beach with a wedding on it.
The Pass next door is the same geography with more surfers and easier parking. Main Beach puts the town in the frame, which is either the point or the problem. Wategos and The Pass are booked through NSW National Parks and Main Beach through Byron Shire Council, and either way you book and pay for it directly with them.
Broken Head, and the hinterland when the coast is full
Broken Head is about fifteen minutes south of town down Broken Head Road, with rainforest behind the sand and enough room that a group is not standing in anybody's way. It is the best answer for a small ceremony between October and April, when Byron itself is at capacity, and it is a permitted reserve like the others.
Inland, Bangalow, Federal, Newrybar and Mullumbimby have the capacity the coast does not: properties that manage their own approvals, parking that is a car park rather than a plan, and afternoon light that lasts. In mid summer the hinterland is the more comfortable ceremony by a wide margin, and it is a shorter drive from the Tweed than Byron town is.

Questions
Questions people ask
- Where is the best place to elope in Byron Bay?
- Wategos at sunrise, for the light, the shelter and the fact that almost nobody books it. Broken Head for space with rainforest behind the sand. Main Beach only if you want the town in frame. Inland, the properties around Bangalow and Federal have better capacity and easier parking than anywhere coastal.
- Do you need a council permit to elope on a Byron beach?
- Yes. Byron Shire Council books Main Beach and its other beaches and reserves, and Wategos and The Pass sit inside the Cape Byron State Conservation Area and are booked through NSW National Parks. Both quote the fee on application, and you book and pay for it directly with them. Summer sunset slots are the most competitive booking in this region.
- Is Byron or the hinterland better for a small ceremony?
- The hinterland, most of the time. Bangalow, Federal and Mullumbimby have more capacity, less permit pressure and no parking problem, and in mid summer the light inland is kinder than a crowded beach at five o'clock. Byron itself is worth the trouble at sunrise and rarely at any other hour.
- Should we book a Byron Bay elopement package?
- If you want the permit, the photographer and the styling handled in one booking, yes. Several local businesses do this well and they can simply add me to their run sheet. If you would rather book the parts yourself it costs less and takes more calls. Both are normal here.
