Where to elope in the Tweed hinterland

The Tweed Valley is the cheapest good place to elope in this region, and a hinterland elopement here has no beach permit pressure, Wollumbin behind almost every frame, and a Tweed Shire permit only where you are on public land. Crystal Creek, Uki and Tyalgum are the three to look at first, and the light is best in the two hours before sunset.

Crystal Creek, and the retreat above it

Crystal Creek asks the least of you of any site up here: rainforest, running water, deep shade at any hour, and a sealed road most of the way in. It suits a group of up to about twenty, and it suits people who are not going to walk far in good shoes. The Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat above it has a covered deck, which answers the weather question and the lunch question in one booking.

Where you are on public land it is a Tweed Shire reserve, so a shire permit applies and you have to book the site ahead. On the retreat's own ground it does not, because you are dealing with the owners and with nobody else.

Uki, Tyalgum and the roads between them

The swimming holes on the Uki side are the most photographed elopement sites in the valley and the most work: a short walk in, no facilities, wet rock underfoot and very little phone reception. They reward a group of four and punish a group of twenty. Go and stand in one before you book it.

Tyalgum is the opposite, with a hall, a pub, four buildings and paddocks in every direction with Wollumbin behind them. It is the wet weather answer for the whole upper valley and a good ceremony on its own terms. Between the two the roads are narrow, they climb, and after heavy rain some of them close, which is worth knowing when the ceremony is at four.

Questions

Questions people ask

Do you need a permit to elope in the Tweed hinterland?
Only on public land. Tweed Shire books its reserves, swimming holes and parks, and you book and pay for the permit directly with the shire. On private property, whether that is a friend's paddock, a farmstay or a rainforest retreat, you need the owner's permission and nothing else.
What is the wet-weather plan up there?
Book somewhere with a roof within ten minutes and decide the trigger in advance. The Tyalgum hall and the hinterland pubs both work at short notice, and most of the rainforest retreats have a covered deck. The Tweed gets its rain in short heavy bursts, so a two hour delay often solves it better than a relocation.
When is the light best in the Tweed Valley?
The two hours before sunset, with the sun behind you and Wollumbin lit up to the west. Mornings are softer but the mountain is backlit. In midsummer the valley floor goes into shadow earlier than the coast does, so a 4pm ceremony that works in June is too late in January.
