A legals only ceremony at Tweed Heads with Felicity Best is $650 midweek: ten to fifteen minutes, up to ten guests, paperwork lodged. What the ten minutes contains
A welcome, my legal statement about the nature of marriage in Australia, one line of vows each said word for word, and three certificates signed in front of two witnesses. That is the entire legal requirement and everything else is optional. Most couples add a reading or a ring exchange, which takes it to about fifteen minutes.
Afterwards I send the paperwork to the registry within fourteen days, which is a legal deadline rather than a courtesy. You leave with a commemorative certificate, and you order the official one from the registry at their price, either on the day or in five years.
What it does not shorten
A legals only ceremony is a short ceremony, not a short process. Your Notice of Intended Marriage still has to be lodged at least one calendar month before the day, you still need a birth certificate or passport each, photo identification and evidence that any previous marriage has ended, and you still need two witnesses aged eighteen or over. The NOIM, explained.
What it does shorten is everything the law does not ask for: no script to write, no rehearsal, no consultations to schedule. It suits couples marrying quietly before a larger celebration later, couples marrying a second time, and anyone who would rather deal with the law on one day and hold the party on another.
Questions
Questions people ask
- Where is the nearest registry office to Tweed Heads?
- Brisbane, about ninety minutes north, or Sydney, which is a flight or a nine hour drive, because New South Wales holds registry ceremonies in Sydney only. That is the whole reason a legals only ceremony exists locally: the same paperwork, done where you are, on a day of your choosing.
- Which registry is cheaper for the certificate?
- Queensland, marginally: $58.10 for a standard marriage certificate against $70 in New South Wales, with priority options in both. It is a small difference, and it is the only practical consequence of choosing a side of the border for a ceremony held at Tweed Heads.
